As I approach my one year anniversary of volunteering at PRERNA, I find myself reflecting on what drew me to this particular opportunity. I felt the urge to do something for the world around me. When I learned about how we are hurting animals by polluting the Earth, I decided that I should try to prevent this. My name is Madina Hakimi and I’m 16 years old. I was born in Afghanistan and am now living in the United States of America with my parents and two brothers. After a long trip from Kabul to Dubai and then to Los Angeles, we arrived in San Jose, California in October 2016. We came through the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) Program. When I first met a refugee family, I noticed how vulnerable refugees are. And yet, they are so grateful for any help. As a Girl Scout leader for my daughter’s troop, I saw how she and her troop sisters helped a Congolese refugee family of eight. They tutored the children in English and Math as well as their homework assignments. If we assist refugees even a little bit, it can make a huge difference in their lives. READ MORE
